a speedvagen nugget if you haven't already seen it. http://have-a-snack.blogspot.com/2007/08/speedvagen-crumbs.html

oooooh myyyyyyy. hadn't seen those myself. those are too tasty. thank for sharing!

per chance have you been sneaking aroung the workshop? spy photos perhaps?

i wish. was over there 2 weeks ago and talked to sacha; they had everything they needed to start building *except* the new V dropouts. whoever the supplier is still had those in the queue. i did meet the new dude from 'coat' who's doing the paint (ex-spectrum)-- cool guy, very chill. the new paint coming out of his shop is just astonishingly beautiful. but back to the vagen-- nope, no spy photos. sacha was still trying to decide on just what the 'surprise' paint was gonna be... but from the sounds of it, its going to be dope wild. (i think i'm going with light blue.)

when I first heard the paint choices,
I told them to my 4 yr old daughter. She said she wanted me to get a blue bike, a robins egg blue (she had just seen a real robins egg for the 1st time). I off-handedly mentioned that to sacha in an email back in april. Lo and behold, it stuck. my choice was made for me long ago ;-)

so funny! i have 3 daughters, the youngest is 4, and since 'pink' wasn't a choice, the robin's egg blue was the unanimous favorite! so we know 2 of the 30 will be blue... nice!

LOL Oh, I'm quite certain that if she handn't just seen the robins egg, pink would have been no. 1...and I wouldnt' put it past sacha to make that a choice given the gentle lovers kit. I went so far as to exploit my own children to score the speedvagen. shameless, simply shameless.

man, still no dropouts. that sucks.

that is classic! and i'm only a little jealous that i didn't think of doing that first. i am in advertising, and i might be a little guilty of putting my daughters in work and pitch stuff. about pink-- sacha mentioned it, but he kinda thinks pink is a little 'done', at least for this 'surprise' purpose. he was thinking out loud about something BIG, and gold, and glittery... how only the toughest guys can rock paint like that. i am sure it will be trippy, whatever it is, and very cool-- it's a bit odd that they can do little if anything wrong! nice video, great family. NEWSFLASH: got a brief email from Sacha yesterday; said they are "mid fabrication now" so maybe the dropouts landed...

I was actually quite pleased w/ the little movie considering I had just gotten my first macbook a week prior and took the shots w/ a point-n-shoot in movie mode. looking back, I could have made it much slicker, but who's got time for that crap.

I wish I could pull off the "suprise me" option. I'm picturing 70's fiberglass speedboat paintjobs. nice.

mid-fab huh. I"m hoping that means that all the tubes are cut, the frames tacked, and desalvo is on his way up as we speak to blitz the tig. It's going to take a real charrette to pull it off, but as you say, it seems sacha can do no wrong. be still my heart.
so what trinkets have you amassed for z vagen? I'm going force+deda+pmp+king+blingyhomemadecarbonwheels

ps.

That sounds like one tasty build! I am forced to be a little more, um, economical at this point, which is a shame. Its probably going to shakeout to be more of a traditional 105/ultegra/open pro sort of mix. I am living on a very strict budget for a couple years and have no wiggle room and saving up for the frameset itself has been a leap itself. But his kit options are truly the way to go; I'm hoping I can run the cool stuff like that next season.

I feel your pain. I'd been saving pennies for a long time. Sold my pit bike, a vintage coke machine I had restored..*sniff*.. and a bunch of other crap to finance it. I financed my wheels by building a bunch for team mates. what a bad idea that was.
LOL. are you planning on posting pics on the svaagen site. (love that by the way.

let me know if you get anymore updates. use thoeffel at gmaildotcom
if you like. a bit more efficient.
you're the only other speedvagener i've had contact w/

Hey,

I made the Speedvagen short list and am signed up for Surprise me. Now we know what 10% of the paint jobs are going to be. I went for the Vanilla team build kit from Sacha. The only change I asked for was to make the King headset and hubs a different color than black and to match them up real nice with Surprise me. :-)

Now I am sitting here in Seattle waiting for the word to get my rear end down to Portland and pick up my ride. Last I heard, my vagen is supposed to be ready for the first race of our series on Sept. 30th. Until then, I am rocking my San Jose SS.

Did you all go for single speed or gears on your build?

Andy Askren said...

hi fixie,

i think you're gonna be happy with the 'surprise me' option. in fact, i am soooooo wavering on that one point-- from what i heard from sacha's musings, its gonna be not subtle. its truly going to be...surprising...and really attention-getting.

although i love the purity of a ss, and having raced one season on it, i actually prefer the variety of a 1 x 9 set-up so that's what i am going for. plus i figure if i do want to go back to ss, i can have mike or sacha redo that for next season.

tjh said...

oh man. ever since we've been chatting, i've been seesawing on the "suprise me" option as well. but seeing as i guilted sacha into the blue, I'd better stick w/ it.

I went w/ a gearie, and sold my SS to help finance. Sacha offered me an SS as well, but i couldnt' swing it. I dont' deserve one speedvagen, much less two. I miss mine already though, but i'm old and need the gears. I would have gone w/ the team kit as well if i hadn't already spent the summer gathering basically the same kit (substitute deda bars/stem for ritchey).

Hey Andy, care to set up your blog as the home base for our vagen build. I'd offer, but svaagen is sooo much better a name for such a project.

look at the big brain on tjh! love the idea of making this a speedvagen central. consider it done!

let it be known throughout the land: all speedvaagen (note the plural treatment, so says I) shall be welcomed here. post your builds, your thoughts, your first mud, first dents, first scratches, your results, your comments, your observations, your pics, your videos, the first babes you get because of your vaagen. all of it.

we're taking it to 11, people.
